Let's Chat

For this post I wanted to take a little detour from my usual blurbs on fashion tips and personal style and to instead have a conversation about two things that mean a lot to me: body positivity and loving yourself.

Last night as I was scrolling through the hundreds of posts on social media in support of women and young girls all over the world, I smiled to myself at all the beautiful faces, body types, and skin colors that were represented in those photos, and I though to myself:

wow, we are all so damn beautiful!

And it's day's like yesterday, National Women's Day, that I feel so proud to fight like a girl, run like a girl, scream like a girl, because it's us girls who are fighting for our rights, running for president, and screaming for change. A true sisterhood of determined and strong human beings.

But sometimes it can be hard to realize our beauty and our strength. Little girls dig into their moms' purse and snatch a copy of Cosmopolitan to hide in their rooms where they gaze at the supermodel on the cover next to the words "perfect," or "ideal." And some girls stare into their bright phone screens, blinking at comments telling them their "thunder thighs" ruin the photo they posted on social media.

There will always be people telling you you're not good enough and you just have to remember that you ARE good enough! You are you, and throughout the entire existence of time and the universe there has never been anyone like you and there will never be anyone like you.

Bringing It Back to Fashion ( I couldn't resist )

I was once again scrolling through Instagram; the account belonging to the feminist, activist, and photographer, Petra Collins (@petrafcollins) is always a source of inspiration for me with its pastel, dream-like, theme featuring stunning photos of women strutting their stuff in high-fashion attire.

But this time I caught sight of a photograph Collins had posted featuring girls wearing the feminist clothing brand Me and You, developed by Mayan Toledano and Julia Baylis, proclaimed "bff's" of Collins.

I was pleasantly surprised and refreshed by this brand's use of your-average-everyday-girls as their models for their clothes as well as the brand's theme of unapologetic femininity and feminism with t-shirts and panties featuring prints of kiss-stains and phrases like "don't touch."

In an article posted in 2015 by i-D magazine via VICE, Toledano and Baylis told i-D they had wanted to create a brand that spoke to their idea that "'girls can be whoever they want, whenever they want, and wear whatever they want.'"

The article also shone light on this "pastel power" movement sparked by influencers like the creators of Me and You along with a group of young artists and photographers are working to prove that feminism is not a trend "one Instagram of an unwaxed bikini line at a time."

I have fallen in love with this brand and it's message that any girl, any woman, should be able wear what they want and feel confident, and that feminism isn't just a trend that will fade away, it's here to stay. The name of the brand says it all: its Me and You, and together we are strong, we are beautiful, we are women.
